Representing the History of the Pearl

The Maytag sits on the corner of NW 11th and NW Hoyt Street, which is named for Captain Richard Hoyt.

The sidewheeler Multnomah, photographed circa 1851–1853 during her construction and early service, was the steamboat commanded and later owned by Captain Richard Hoyt (1817–1862). Hoyt arrived in Portland in 1851, took command of the Multnomah in 1853, and bought the vessel outright in 1854, running her on the Portland–Astoria mail route until his death in 1862. In 1857 he organized the Columbia Steam Navigation Company and built a river trade that spanned the rest of his life on Oregon waters.
