Downtown Self Storage: Davis Street
1305 Davis Street, Portland, OR 97209
In Pearl History
Long before it stored boxes and bikes, this historic spot was buzzing with barrels and crates. Built in 1917, the Wadhams & Kerr Building was home to one of Portland’s big wholesale grocery operations. Today, it’s part of the 13th Avenue Historic District—and a living reminder of the Pearl’s working roots.
Davis Street, home to a Downtown Self Storage location, is named after Major Anthony L. Davis (middle), who was one of the first advocates for a public school system in Portland. In 1851, he also served as the first director of the Portland school system. He was appointed to the role of circuit Judge in 1858. His daughter also married David W. Burnside, after which Burnside Street was named.
