Pearl District nonprofit spotlights artists with autism and developmental disabilities at spring gallery event
On April 21st, Portland's Pearl District came alive with creativity as North Pole Studio opened its doors for its annual Partners Celebration — a gallery showcase honoring the contributing artists at the heart of this beloved Portland nonprofit.
Speakers included Executive Director Carissa Burkett, board member and NPS artists Max LaZebnik, Eli Kern, and Rachel Arnold.
Founded in spring 2020, North Pole Studio is a Portland-based 501(c)(3) nonprofit arts organization co-founded by transition specialist and educator Sula Willson, artist and educator Mary Ellen Andersen, founding artist Davis Wohlford, and parent and advocate Sarah Mensah. The organization is led by a dedicated team of artists, educators, parents, and advocates committed to expanding access and visibility in the arts.
Located in a spacious 5,000 square-foot studio in the heart of Portland's Pearl District, North Pole Studio works to increase opportunities for artists with autism and intellectual and developmental disabilities (I/DD) to thrive as active members of the broader arts community. The studio's mission centers on self-determination — fostering meaningful connections and full engagement in the arts as a pathway to creative and civic participation.
The annual Partners Celebration is a direct expression of that mission: a moment to recognize the community partners, volunteers, donors, and collaborators whose support makes the work possible; and, most importantly, to showcase the artists themselves.
"A collective understanding of diverse human experiences is foundational to a vibrant and whole community," says North Pole Studio. Through studio practice and community engagement, North Pole Studio works to ensure that artists with autism and I/DD are seen as self-determined, visible, and valuable contributors to both the local and national contemporary art community.
For Pearl District residents and neighbors looking to connect with one of Portland's most dynamic and mission-driven creative spaces, North Pole Studio welcomes community involvement year-round.
